Position: CIRCULATING NURSE OPERATING ROOM
Department: Surgery
Job Summary
Utilizing specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgement, the OR nurse is responsible for the patient safety and nursing care during transportation and while in the surgery suite.
Job Relationships
Responsible to:
Director of Surgical Services.
Employees Supervised:
Operating Room Technicians, Volunteers.
Inter relationships:
Medical Staff, Nursing Services, Ancillary Departments, Patients/Families, and Visitors.
Essential Job Functions
Ensures patient comfort and safety at all times.
Maintains proper care of instruments and supplies.
Supervises and directs the activities of nonprofessional personnel.
Visits patients pre‑operatively to alleviate fear and performs assessment of patient for any nursing care concerns.
Checks room for needed supplies and prepares room for specific patient procedure.
Checks equipment to ensure that it is in proper working condition.
Transports patients to and from the surgical suite and transfers to the OR table using knowledge of safe and proper positioning.
Prepares the operative site by shaving if needed and performs the appropriate surgical prep.
Assists the anesthetist with intubation.
Monitors urine output and records in OR nurses' notes.
Assists team throughout surgery as needed.
Properly labels and handles OR specimens.
Assists with, and is responsible for correct sponge, needle, and instrument count.
Participates in Process Assessment and Improvement activities when appropriate.
Performs duties as outlined in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
Completes continuing education requirements as defined by the Director of Surgical Services.
Monitors surgical team for breaks in sterile technique and informs them of same.
Contacts ancillary departments as needed, i.e. lab, x‑ray, etc.
Informs floor nurses as to the patient's progress.
Knowledge of privileges of each member of Salem Township Hospital Medical Staff and enforcement of same.
Maintains OR records, charge sheets, patient chart, and OR nurses' notes.
Participates in unit meetings and keeps informed of posted and written information.
Marginal Job Functions
Damp dusts room before opening supplies for first case.
Adjusts lights.
Assists with sterile draping.
Assists with dressing application.
Performs clean‑up following procedures.
Changes and dates graph and turns autoclave on.
Functions as an Operating Room Technician if cross trained.
Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Graduate of a School of Nursing and current registration with the Department of Professional Regulation in the State of Illinois.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years previous experience in medical/surgical nursing with one year surgical nursing preferred. Current in CPR. Current ACLS certification. PALS certification recommended.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge of general theory and practice with specific knowledge in operating room technique. Knowledge of good interpersonal relationships.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
Works in well lighted and ventilated area with complicated equipment, some of which is hazardous in nature.
Standing and/or walking for long periods of time.
Pushing, pulling, and positioning light and heavy equipment. Assistive devices available.
Moving patient pre and post operatively.
On call duty.
May be working with patients who have communicable and/or infectious diseases. With proper techniques this should not be a problem.
