Position: LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE/UNIT SECRETARY

Job Summary
Provides assistance to the nursing staff in an assigned unit by maintaining a well-organized and functional unit, performing those duties and responsibilities assigned with competence and efficiency. Performs specific duties of patient care under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse. Acts as an Ambassador to the hospital by maintaining good public relations with patients and families. Communicates with waiting patients on wait time.

Volunteers, Ancillary Departments, Nursing Service Areas, Health Information Services, Business Office, Medical Staff, Patients/Families, Visitors and Clergy.
Essential Job Functions
Transcribes physicians' orders under the supervision of an RN.
Coordinates and directs necessary information to the appropriate hospital departments.
Demonstrates a cheerful, efficient, and helpful attitude when meeting and greeting Patients/Families, Visitors, Clergy, Medical Staff, and Hospital Personnel.
Reorders supplies as needed.
Coordinates communication for the nursing unit, i.e. answers telephone and intercom and relays information to the appropriate person or department.
Provides information to patients/families at timely intervals under the direction of the Physician or Registered Nurse.
Participates in unit meetings and keeps informed of posted and written information.
Participates in the Process Assessment and Improvement activities when appropriate.
Completes ER log book and assembles charge sheets.
Completes continuing education requirements as defined by the Director of Emergency Department.
Demonstrates competency in providing assessment and care for neonates, pediatrics, pre-adolescents, adolescents, young adults, adults, geriatrics.
Informs Director of Emergency Department of any ethical issue concerning patient care based on own cultural values or religious beliefs.
Participates in equipment and procedure competencies as defined annually by the Director of Emergency Department.
Performs duties as outlined in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
Demonstrates competency in the use of restraints.
Assists RN in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating outcomes of care.
Prepares for and assists with special procedures.
Provides personal care to the patient to include but not limited to taking and recording vital signs, measuring intake and output, collecting specimens and lifting/transferring patients.
Assists RN with preparing patient for discharge.
Marginal Job Functions
Orients new employees.
Assists in the maintenance of a clean and orderly unit including checking for outdated supplies.
Assists with transporting patients.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Emergency Department.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Graduate of accredited practical nursing program
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Receptionist or clerical experience preferred. Graduate practical nurse meeting employment criteria. Current in CPR.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Maintains and keeps current with relevant hospital rules and regulations as well as insurance admitting requirements. Must have independent judgment and decision making abilities as well as analytical skills. Good working knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and terminology to perform related clerical tasks in addition to phone etiquette, superior customer service and communication skills. Must possess good human relation/communication skills. Must maintain confidentiality at all times. Knowledge of basic principles involved in nursing care.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
Requires sitting.
Includes walking to patient care areas and ancillary departments.
Busy, sometimes tense and demanding conditions. Must be able to perform duties accurately under stress.
Works in well lighted and ventilated area.
May be exposed to patients who have communicable and/or infectious diseases. With proper techniques, this should not be a problem.
May require extensive mobility, walking, standing and administering of patient care.
Pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients on stretchers and wheelchairs. Assistive devices are available.
