Salem Township Hospital offers comprehensive outpatient cardiac rehab and pulmonary rehab programs. These programs are valuable for patients trying to return to normal daily activities and learn how to reduce risk factors and improve their quality of life.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
The comprehensive outpatient cardiac rehab program is designed for men and women who have suffered a heart attack and/or have had coronary vascular procedures. This program is valuable for patients trying to return to normal daily activities as well as learning how to reduce coronary risk factors to prevent another cardiovascular procedure or event.
Patients enrolled in the Cardiac Rehab learn important information about:
- Eating a healthy diet
- Reducing cholesterol levels
- Maintaining a healthy blood pressure
- Dealing with stress
- Exercising regularly
Cardiac Rehab at Salem Township Hospital has helped me increase my stamina and strength. The amount of medication that I take for blood pressure has decreased also.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a physician-prescribed medically supervised program designed to assist patients with chronic breathing disorders which may improve their daily lives and lessen the effects of their illness.
Patients in the pulmonary rehab program learn about their disease and how to decrease their shortness of breath and the anxiety accompanying it.
Patients are also educated on:
- Specific breathing techniques
- How to keep their lungs healthy
- Oxygen use
- Taking medications correctly
- Importance of exercise
Pulmonary Rehab at Salem Township Hospital has helped me be able to climb three flights of stairs.

Rehabilitation Phases
Phase II Outpatient
Phase II cardiac rehab is an EKG monitored exercise program designed for individuals who have had a heart attack, angioplasty, stent placement, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair, heart transplant, or stable angina.
The Phase II pulmonary program is designed for patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung conditions.
Phase II cardiac patients attend three times a week for up to 36 visits within a 12-18 week time frame.
Phase II pulmonary patients attend three times a week for 12-18 weeks up to 30 visits.
Phase III Maintenance
Phase III is a maintenance program for patients who want to continue their exercise in a supervised environment beyond the Phase II program. Phase III programs are generally not covered by insurance.
Insurance
Cardiac and pulmonary outpatient services are covered by most insurance plans including Medicare; however, prior approval may be necessary in some instances. A physician’s order with qualifying diagnosis is required.
