Angela Betters, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, discussed the issue of isolation and depression among the elderly population during the May Lunch & Learn presentation.

Attendees enjoyed a hot lunch, dessert, and coffee. Three lucky attendees also received a door prize.

Social isolation can increase a person's risk of dementia by about 60%. Angela talked about the risk factors associated with depression and highlighted the cycle of isolation and depression. She emphasized the importance of prevention and intervention and suggested various methods to deal with depression symptoms, such as community-based programs, social activities, physical exercise, and a healthy diet. Early detection and intervention are key to addressing depression. It is crucial to regularly check on friends or family members living a sedentary lifestyle, provide them with companionship, visit them to check on their needs, and encourage them to seek help if needed.

Angela Betters, Sandra Tate, and Diana Tomlianovich are contracted to provide mental health services at the Rural Health Behavioral Clinic in Salem Township Hospital. They can conduct mental health screening to assess if someone suffering from isolation or depression may benefit from therapy or medication and can also help in finding relevant community programs.
